The Warriors-Kevin Durant Rumor Mill Is Still Alive Somehow

The Warriors-Kevin Durant Rumor Mill Is Still Alive Somehow

As the Golden State Warriors continue to surge with their new acquisition, Jimmy Butler, fitting seamlessly alongside Steph Curry and Draymond Green, the buzz surrounding a potential Kevin Durant return to the Bay Area refuses to die. Despite the Warriors' success with Butler, it seems there are still whispers that the team might make another run at bringing Durant back to Golden State.

The Durant Situation

Durant recently made headlines by rejecting a trade that would have sent him to the Warriors from the Phoenix Suns. According to the superstar himself, the decision to reject the move was driven by two main reasons: he didn’t want to relocate midseason, and he was wary of the impact such a trade would have on the team he was leaving behind.

In an appearance on Draymond Green’s podcast, Durant explained his stance: "I didn’t want to move, and I get why you want to trade me, but we can play the season out, and if that’s the decision you want to make in the offseason, we’ll figure it out.” Durant's comments made it clear that he wasn't averse to the idea of eventually joining the Warriors—just not in the middle of the season.

The Warriors Are Not Giving Up

Despite Durant’s rejection of the trade, the idea of a Durant-Warriors reunion remains very much alive. Longtime Warriors insider Tim Kawakami stirred the pot further when he stated on the "Damon Bruce" YouTube show on Friday: "Don’t take your eye off of Kevin Durant in July. I don’t know if he’ll want to come. I don’t know if they’ll be able to do it, but this is a team that loves Kevin Durant and might try to go get him again."

This sentiment was echoed by Warriors owner Joe Lacob, who spoke with Kawakami on the "TK Show" podcast. When asked if he was disappointed by Durant’s decision to reject the trade, Lacob responded: "There’s always usually a motive for these things. Somebody wants to get paid or not paid. Somebody wants to influence somebody to trade them to a certain place."

The Suns' Plans to Trade Durant

Adding more fuel to the fire, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has been adamant that the Suns will trade Durant this summer. In an appearance on ESPN’s “NBA Today” show, Windhorst stated: "They’re going to trade [Durant], and he knows that." This confirmation has only intensified the speculation that Durant could be on the move once the offseason hits, and the Warriors are positioning themselves as potential suitors.

Warriors’ Optionality and Future Plans

In addition to the Durant rumors, Kawakami pointed out that the Warriors' acquisition of Butler was all about "optionality." Even with Butler now fitting in so well, the Warriors could still be preparing for a bigger splash this summer, whether it be Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, or another superstar. The team’s financial flexibility and the allure of playing with Curry make them an attractive destination for top-tier talent.

Kawakami summed it up by saying, "This is how smart, rich teams operate. They have an advantage, it’s the money. They have another advantage, it’s Steph Curry. Guys want to play with him. Maximize it. Don’t just sit back and say, ‘Oh, you know what, this is fine as we’re going.’"

Looking Ahead

Even though the Warriors are playing well with their current roster, it’s clear that their front office isn’t resting on its laurels. The dream of reuniting with Durant is still alive, and with the team’s success in mind, the possibility of another blockbuster move could be just around the corner. Whether it’s Durant or another superstar, the Warriors’ sights are set on continuing to maximize their championship window.

Stay tuned as the offseason approaches—it looks like the Warriors’ pursuit of another big star could be heating up once again.
